A mathematics teacher from Murrumburrah High School has announced he will be standing as a candidate for Hilltops Council at the upcoming local government election in December.

Patrick FitzGerald has lived in the region for 25 years and says he has a strong commitment to the community.
He has served in a number of volunteer positions including as President and Board Member of Young Golf Club and President and Board Member of Gumnut Grove ChildCare Centre.
After a long career in educational administration, including a 15 year stint as Deputy Principal of Young High School, he has developed a wide range of skills that would make him an excellent councillor.
Mr FitzGerald stated he was standing because he believed that in recent years the council has become less efficient in serving the needs of the Hilltops community.
"There are two reasons for this, firstly the complications involved in the amalgamation, both financially and administratively," he said.
"Secondly, perceptions of the members of council itself not presenting a unified approach.
"Making effective communication with the community a high priority of all council staff will make the Council a more responsive organisation to the needs of everybody in the Hilltops region."
His expertise is in administration and management and believes he can bring a new insight into how to achieve this in an efficient and cost effective manner.
He also stated that he will visit as many businesses as he can before the election to find out what the community is concerned about and ideas for the next council.
