Lions Club members show care and compassion in trying times

With the world still coming to grips with COVID-19, one of the toughest aspects of the pandemic has been social isolation and, arguably, the elderly in small communities have been hardest hit.

With a smile on their faces and some special treats in hand, members of Boorowa Lions Club decided to do something about it - visiting elderly residents in Carinya Court and Burrowa Retirement Village to hand out "Pamper Packs".

Boorowa Lions Club Secretary Marilyn Miller said it was the first time the group had attempted this sort of endeavour.

"We knew that everybody this year had had a challenging year, particularly the elderly," she said.

"We wanted to show care and concern and touch base with them and just see if there was anything we could do as a club."

Items in the Pamper Packs included Lions Club mints, a mini Christmas Cake, a couple of English Breakfast tea bags, a fold up card for medical information, a bar of soap, tissues and a small, carry pack of hand sanistiser.

"One of our members made a lovely carry bag out of material and we put a little Lions Club card wishing them all the best,"Marilyn said.

"We just wanted to show care and concern and that somebody else is thinking of them."

Marilyn said the club has received positive feedback for the initiative.

"In about half an hour, I got a couple of phone calls back, that people said. 'Oh thank you so much, it was just beautiful, it was lovely of you to think of us'," she said.

The club is on the lookout for new members and Marilyn is encouraging younger residents in Boorowa to put their hand up to help out their community.

"We have two meetings a month, one is business meeting and the other one is a dinner meeting, and we always welcome visitors along to our dinner meeting," she said.

Lions Club members assist on a local, regional, national and international level, in particular with disaster relief, running the Boorowa Driver Reviver during holidays and long weekends and supporting Ronald McDonald House in Wagga Wagga.

"Our motto is We Serve, so we're very much a service club and we're happy to help people whenever we can," Marilyn said.

You can also support the club by purchasing a Lions Club Christmas Cake, which are available now at the Boorowa Pharmacy, Boorowa Hotel (Top Pub), Boorowa Community Bank, Boorowa Ex-Services Club, Boorowa Recreation Club and Brae Neuk.

Lions Club mints are also available at various outlets in town.
