Young's Community and Residents Association [YCRA] passed a motion on Wednesday night to support the petition and make it available in the Hilltops region.
"We have taken this on because we are a community based organisation set up to represent the issues or concerns raised by the community," Mark Wells of the YCRA said.
"We will be seeking places to place the petition starting in Young. Harden has already started."
Cr Matt Stadtmiller, who is pro-demerger, prior to the meeting spoke about what's required to get the petition off the ground and running, and also explained how neighbouring residents of the merged Cootamundra/Gundagai Council have successfully sparked the possibility of an independent review from the state government.
About 25 residents of Young attended the public meeting at the Uniting Church hall.
According to Cr Stadtmiller about 1500 signatures, 10 per cent of the Hilltops population, is needed to attract the attention of Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock.
"[Cootamundra/Gundagai] reached enough numbers on that petition to trigger a review from the state government so people can make submissions about how effective or ineffective those mergers are," Cr Stadtmiller said.
"People have been simmering about how the merger has gone over the past few years. About 14,152 people voted in the Hilltops council election so 10 per cent of that is about 1400. That's what our aim is to do.
"There's an opportunity now based on what the Snowy Valleys and Cootamundra/Gundagai have done with very active community groups."
The petition is available at the Salvation Army family store in Young.
More copies are expected to be made available at different venues.
To support it you must be a registered voter on the electoral roll and live in the Hilltops region.
