Daniel John Corkhill, 24, received the driving ban when he appeared before magistrate Michael O’Brien in the Young Local Court on February 13 charged with high range drink driving.
In addition to the driving ban, Corkhill will only be permitted to drive a vehicle with an interlock device fitted to it for 24 months after renewing his licence.
He was also ordered by magistrate O’Brien to pay a $500 fine and placed on a Community Corrections Order for 12 months.
Corkhill was stopped by police in Lynch Street, Young on December 23 last year for a random breath test which returned a positive result.
He told police that he had consumed 12 schooners at a hotel in Young between 2.20pm and 11pm that day.
A breath analysis returned a reading of 0.249.
The court was told it was Corkhill’s first offence of any kind and he made a decision to drive his vehicle a short distance from the hotel he was drinking at to the motel where he intended to stay for the night.
During sentencing Mr O’Brien reminded Corkhill of the lives which had been destroyed at the hands of drivers who should not have been behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.
“Damage and destruction can occur over a short distance as well as over long distances.
“Fortunately for you there were no aggravating features associated with your offence.”
“Hopefully you’ll now make better judgements, if you’re going to go out and socialise, don’t drive,” Mr O’Brien told Corkhill.
