Australia Day went off very well despite the heat. A good crowd turned up to welcome our Australia Day Ambassador Donna Ciccia, have breakfast, a chat and acknowledge the wonderful work of people doing their bit to make Boorowa the town it is.

Speaking at the AD Committee dinner the night before, at the official AD Ceremony and to many in personal conversation, Donna has done a remarkable job in making people aware of the problems faced by women (1 in 10), and occasionally men, from endometriosis.

The fact that the Boorowa Central School incoming school captains MC our AD Ceremony and that we have a Junior Ambassador to introduce our AD Ambassador makes our ceremony unique.
It would be remiss to not acknowledge the great job Amelia Hewitt and Caleb Boland did as MCs, and Majella McGrath, she excelled with her speech and introduction of Donna Ciccia.
These young people continue to amaze Ambassadors each year. Sometimes we just get it right.

It was great to see Yvonne Malone win the well deserved acclaim as she was named Citizen of the Year 2018. I happened to be on the judging panel choosing our winner, and I must say there were some outstanding nominations, but on seeing the nomination for Yvonne, all panelists were amazed that she had not received this recognition before.
Despite the quality of the nominations, the panel had no problem naming Yvonne as our Citizen of the Year. Yvonne has done so much for so many people and so many organisations over a very long period of time, maybe she’s even Citizen of a Generation.

Heard a good yarn at Balladeers. Hope I’ve got it pretty right. A rather pompous woman arrives back at the airport after an overseas trip where she is met by her rather hen pecked husband.
No hellos, simply, “How’s the cat?”
“Dead!”
Looking somewhat alarmed, the wife repeats, “HOW’S THE CAT?”
“Dead!”
In a somewhat angered tone, the wife says, “You are the most unfeeling, hard person I know. You have no care for my feelings.” Pondering for a moment, the wife says, “Couldn’t you have broken this dreadful news in a more sympathetic manner?”
Seeing the bemused look on her husband’s face, she continued, “Something like … the cat climbed up onto the roof and fell off, landing on the hard concrete. Knowing he was gravely hurt you rushed him to the Vet who tried everything to save him, but unfortunately he passed away.”
With barely a pause, the wife then said, “HOW’S MOTHER?”
The husband dropped his head thinking and finally said, “Your mother climbed onto the roof...”

It is the people who hop in and lend a hand, it’s the volunteers that make a town great and build town spirit. Bede Morrissey embarrassed me at Balladeers rattling on about the things I do for this town. All the volunteers acknowledged last Saturday, all the volunteers acknowledged since the inception of Australia Day celebration in Boorowa in 1994, all these volunteers, like myself, don’t do what we do seeking kudos, we all do it because we love our town.
Our volunteers and members of service clubs are getting older. Not many younger people are coming forward to help.
Young people, this is your town too. Think about it – lend a hand and help keep Boorowa great.
