Lizzy was six-years old, her parents were getting a divorce, her mother was pregnant with her little brother, things were rocky for them.
On Christmas Eve, Lizzy’s Mom got a phone call and the woman on the phone said she had heard they were having a tough time and asked if it would be okay if Santa came to visit. Lizzy lived in a small town, so her Mom wasn’t too surprised that people knew of their troubles.
A little later Lizzy and her family heard bells and down the road came a horse drawn carriage with a real life Santa. He came and gave Lizzy a Cabbage Patch Doll (it was the 80’s).
To this day Lizzy and her family still doesn’t know who Santa was or who had made the call to Lizzy’s mum.
Every year Lizzy sends a little thank you by trying to do something special for someone else who needs it. That Christmas taught Lizzy what Christmas is all about, and she never gets tired of seeing other people’s faces light up when she has been able to be their Santa.

Boorowa has its own Santas who organise a fabulous Christmas Day dinner for those who would otherwise spend Christmas alone. Elizabeth and Jenny arrange this marvelous treat on Christmas Day, 12 noon for 12.30pm at St John’s Anglican Church Hall.
There is no need to be alone, all you’ve got to do is let Jenny or Elizabeth know that you’d like to join them on Christmas Day.
Very easy to contact one of these two remarkable ‘Santas’ – call into the library or ring 6380 2031.
Speaking of the library, closes for the Christmas break noon this Saturday December 22, re-opening 3pm Wednesday, January 2, 1919.

It was just before Christmas and the magistrate was in a happy mood. He asked the prisoner in the dock, “What are you charged with?”
The prisoner replied, “Doing my Christmas shopping too early.”
“That’s no crime.” Said the magistrate. “Just how early were you doing this shopping?”
“Before the shop opened,” answered the prisoner.

In 230 years Australia has grown into a vibrant, successful, predominantly Christian country. Christmas is a valued celebration in our calendar. Australia offers freedom of religious celebration, and we love the story of Christmas and the fact that we enjoy the company of family and friends in the traditional way we know and love.
I would hate to see us drop the ‘Christ’ out of Christmas, a fact we face if we pander to sensitivities of others who now call Australia home.
Imagine not being able to say Merry Christmas”, forced to say “Happy Holidays”. We love our Christmas trees, “Holiday tree” doesn’t have the same ring.
People adopting Australia as home should recognize the traditions recognized by most Australians.
The ‘Iron Lady’ puts this case so well saying:
“Christmas is a day of meaning and traditions, a special day spent in the warm circle of family and friends.” (Margaret Thatcher)
