Over the past three years, BCLG has been operating under the Community Industry & Landscape Funds, divulged from National Landcare Programme through South East Local Land Services.
This has enabled Boorowa Community Landcare Group (BCLG) to support a co-ordinator to help them run events and regular members’ activities on a vast range of topics from regenerative agriculture, pasture cropping, fodder shrubs, grazing, fruit tree pruning, bees, drones and other technology.
In addition to BCLG’s core activities, in 2017 we were successful in gaining funding from SE Landcare for several sub-regional events.
The first was a Landcare muster between Hovells Creek, Boorowa Community Landcare and Yass Area Network of Landcare groups; where there was great interaction between Landcare members from Murrumbateman, Sutton to Hovells Creek and Boorowa.
We were also able to host a special champions event with a bus trip to a number of Hovells Creek properties and a celebratory dinner at the Frogmore Hall. BCLG’s Australia Day’s Landcare Champions, Andrew Southwell, Nicki Merriman and David Marsh received recognition for their environmental works from Landcare NSW’s CEO Adrian Zammit and Chair Rob Dulhunty.
With this sub-regional funding from we also hosted a forum; Join the Climate Conversation – Rural Communities Making a Difference at Yass Memorial Hall.
More than 220 interested community members joined in the conversation, led by speakers Dr Charles Massey, Dr Christine Jones, Dr Siwann Lovett from Australian River Restoration Centre and ANU paleo climatologist, Dr Bradley Opdyke.
In mid-2017 BCLG won a grant, Environmental Trust Land and Water Connections for Superb Parrots and Pygmy Perch in the Pudman Catchment.
This grant has enabled community activities like bird watching, seed collecting and planting of aquatic plants.
BCLG is also a partner in a consortium in the ‘Save our Superb Parrot’ grant to protect and expand the habitat of Superb Parrots.
The next event will be Bird Survey Training on October 23, 2018 in the Upper Lachlan.
Throughout the year we have also worked with lots of students to provide a range of environmental activities to schools in the Yass, Boorowa and Young area, and continued our relationship with North Sydney Bushcare Group.
2019 will be the 20th year of this Urban Rural partnership so we are looking forward celebrating this achievement. Boorowa community Landcare will have been operating for 30yrs in 2019 so we are also looking forward to planning some extra special events to celebrate this major milestone.
Please join us at our AGM on Thursday October 25, 2018 at 6.00pm Boorowa Ex-Services Club. Guest speaker will be Matt Doyle, talking about regenerative agriculture in USA.
Tickets $20 members, $30 non-members to cover dinner. RSVP to landcare@boorowa.net or call 0459 681018.
We invite YOU, our members to get on board with the Boorowa Community Landcare executive committee to help make next year one that stands out for Landcare in our district.
