The day started with a delicious morning tea.
Then Rob Armstrong spoke and had a Powerpoint presentation about native orchids and especially those indigenous to our area.
All our orchids require a fungus in the soil to help them grow and there are specific fungi for specific orchids, just as there are specific pollinators for specific orchids eg. wasps, sawfly hover fly and ants.
The next presentation was by Leah Colfax from WIRES who told us about owls found in this area.
The two main owls are the Southern Bobook and the Barnyard owl.
May to July is the main breeding times and they have one or two chicks.
The CWA 's country of study this year is Poland and Monica Langfield from Morongla Creek talked about her trip to Poland when her brother married a Polish girl.
One of the places she visited while over there was Krakow where there are salt mines that the locals have sculpted into beautiful statues eg a whole church with altars, pews pipe organ etc.
The sculpting started in 1895 and took 30 years to complete.
They ceased mining here about 10 years ago. She also visited Auschwitz which she found quite confronting.
Her brother's wedding went on for hours with a five course meal as well as a smorgasbord.
Lots of eating, dancing and drinking vodka. The band was hired until 5am the next morning.
Morongla ladies outdid themselves at lunchtime with the choice of either pumpkin or chicken soup, followed by sandwiches, party pies and sausage rolls.
The dessert was apple crumble with ice cream.
The afternoon's entertainment included twp skits and poetry readings. Winners of the various competitions were then announced.
The Ada Chesher Trophy for three flowers using any medium was won by Marie Langfield of Morongla Creek branch. Morongla Creek did very well with a Morongla Creek branch member, Julie Whitby, winning the raffle.
Although numbers were small everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves with interesting guest speakers, wonderful food and friendly company. A perfect way to spent a miserable winter's day!
