In a brave move, the team will participate in the A-Grade competition which including Boorowa will be made up of six teams. The Yass Association is delighted to have Boorowa back on board after years as a nomadic team and was the driving force behind encouraging Boorowa to field an A-Grade team.
It's hard to assess how Boorowa will go, but given the locals were very competitive against the Young A-Grade teams Boorowa is confident they will be a competitive outfit. Early indications are that most players from the last few seasons are keen to go around again and with the injection of some young blood this season looks bright. It's been well over a decade since Boorowa last wielded the willow on the playing fields at Yass and only a handful of locals have participated in that competition.
The club has enjoyed its time in the Young competition and is appreciative of all that the Young association has done for Boorowa but sometimes change is necessary for a team to evolve and Yass appears to be Boorowa Senior cricket's best option at the moment.
The decision was not an easy one to make and only time will tell if it is the correct one. There were a number of reasons put forward for the move.
After winning four second grade titles in six years it was felt that maybe the team is ready to play first grade cricket on a more consistent weekly basis. Since Young will now basically be a second grade competition this would not be possible.
Young has now committed two first grade teams to the Cowra competition which will draw on the top 20 or so players from the Young Competition. The move is a also a better one financially with the cost of entering a team in Yass almost half of that in Young.
The change of competition is also seen as a long term proposition and hopefully the club can look at entering both an A-Grade and B-Grade team in the 2015/6 season. With the two teams there would be a significant path for our younger cricketers to develop.
At the moment cricketers in the 13-17 year old age bracket seem to be lost to other sports and interests in various competitions. The recent meetings held by the Yass Association have impressed the Boorowa delegates with their professionalism and organisation.
Although Boorowa has put an A-Grade team in this season, our motto won't change a bit.
Anyone who wants a game no matter what their ability will get a run at some point. We are looking to the future and too form two teams in the future we need many players on board by next summer.
Winning is nice but our cricket club has always been about participation and enjoying a good time. We are strongly encouraging our teenage cricketers to put their hand up as well as any old boys who are looking to resurrect their career.
Training is expected to commence in the next two weeks with the first scheduled game in the competition expected to be a 20/20 match on October 11. Watch this column weekly for more exciting news on what promises to be a very interesting cricket season.
