A similar workshop was held at Dalton last year and proved very popular.
The aim of the day is to look at ways of improving farm dams for productivity and biodiversity outcomes.
Farm dams are usually multi-purpose structures.
In this area they are primarily built to provide livestock water and/or control erosion.
They can also be used to supply domestic water, garden irrigation, grow fish and provide habitat for wildlife.
Dams can also be recreational and add to the aesthetics of our surroundings.
Topics to be covered will include:
* Problems that occur with poorly managed dams.
* The impact of stock and vegetation on farm dams.
* Water quality, its effect on livestock health and productivity.
* Freshwater wildlife and habitats, especially frogs in the Lachlan Catchment.
* Construction and site issues.
* Licensing and regulations.
* Analysing dam health and developing management plans.
The morning sessions will be held in the Frogmore Hall.
The afternoon session will be held at a nearby dam on Byron Corcoran’s property ‘Forest Home’.
Presenters will include: Peter Cox and Lester McCormick, agronomists from the Department of Primary industry who will be running their ‘Healthy Dams Program’.
This program was also run at Dalton last year.
Elizabeth Braddon our local Livestock Health and Pest Authority vet will talk about water quality and animal health issues.
Carmen Amos is an environmental scientist, from Charles Sturt University in Wagga. She is researching frogs in the Lachlan catchment for her PhD.
Peter Kirwin is from the Soil Conservation Service and will discuss site and construction issues.
Peter can also answer your questions about problem dams, licensing and regulation.
Morning Tea and Lunch catered by the Frogmore Hall Committee.
