National pride and community spirit

Under the guidance of Wilkins, Boorowa raised up as a one to embrace the spirit of the day as national pride filled the Recreation Ground as hundreds gathered in Australian attire to celebrate the characteristics of mateship and ‘having a fair go’, that are the pillars of Australian society.

The ceremony was also a chance to recognise those in our community that invest their time and energy into shaping the Boorowa landscape in the award areas of Landcare, Community, Business and Sport-a full list of winners appears on Page 4.

Reids Flat resident Charlie Chown received the Apex Citizen of the Year Award for his efforts in supporting his community, especially during the floods that hit the area late last year while Boorowa Central School Captain Daniel Anlezark was awarded the Rotary Young Achievers Award.

Throughout the day, there was an array of activities for everyone to enjoy, with music, face painting and a jumping castle keeping children entertained.

The Duck Pond was one of the most popular places to be as experienced and amateur anglers alike joined together for a spot of fishing but no one could surpass Harry Corcoran in catching the first fish.

The annual Rotary Rubber Duck races had plenty of entries as well as raising money with Hume MP Alby Schultz among the supporters.

The Ex-Services Club sponsored the Ex-Services Personnel luncheon which was followed by a game of bowls.

The Boorowa Balladeers were joined by their special guest Bill Wright to share in ‘The Sounds of Australia’ before the day finished with a round of golf at the Recreation Club.

Despite a few spots of rain and heavy cloud cover to start the day off, the temperature climbed throughout the day, with many taking advantage of free entry at the pool to finish off another successful Australia Day.
