Debutantes raise valuable funds for CanAssist

After months of planning, fundraising and dance lessons eight gorgeous young ladies and their equally handsome partners impressed and delighted their invited guests at their debutante ball.

The group consisting of Charlotte Doyle and Tom Marsden, Matilda Townsend and Oliver Walker, Adelaide Langham and Brock Maynard, Stephaine and Thomas Vonthien, Phoebe Walker and Tom Hosie, Hydee Fairley and Jesse Flick, Belle Hartwig and Eli Brown, Chloe Little and Eamonn Ryan were presented to Mrs Tara Morrison, Forbes High School Year 11 Year Advisor and PDHPE teacher.

The group were accompanied by flower girls Alirah and Evie Doyle.

The nervous duos performed their feature dance to “I’ll Be There” by Foster which was choreographed by Miss Emily Jack.

The young ladies looked spectacular in their exquisite gowns and the young gents wore smart single breasted navy suits, crisp white shirts, tan shoes and pale pink accessories which matched the soft pastel colour theme for the evening.

The beautiful cake was lovingly made by Jade Acheson, mother of Belle Hartwig.

Traditionally, debutante balls were formal occasions where young ladies were presented to society after learning manners and etiquette customary of the time.

Modern debutante balls still teach participants social skills but are an opportunity to raise valuable funds for charities and organisations.

The tireless efforts of each and every one of the debutantes and their partners, cooking barbeques, selling raffle tickets and more were justified with a profit of $2220 being raised from the event which will directly benefit Forbes Can Assist.

CanAssist was established in 1955 in response to concerns about country cancer patients accessing treatment in Sydney and the lack of suitably priced accommodation.

Forbes began the first country branch in NSW in 1956 and provided assistance in a number of ways including transport, home visits, housework and much more. The country branches grew and became more organised and there are currently more than 50 branches in NSW.

Forbes CanAssist provides financial assistance to local cancer patients and their families for costs associated with the disease including travel, accommodation, medicines, treatment as well as household expenses due to loss of regular income.

CanAssist does not receive government assistance and relies heavily on the generosity of the Forbes community with fundraising activities and events.

Forbes CanAssist is well supported by members, volunteers and the community of Forbes as all money raised and donated is used to assist Forbes and district cancer patients.

The areas serviced include: Bandon, Bedgerebong, Bundaburrah, Calarie, Carrawabbity, Corinella, Cumbijowa, Eugowra, Fairholme, Forbes, Garema, Grawlin, Gunning Gap, Jemalong, Mulyandry, Ooma, Warroo, Weelong, Wirrinya, Yarrangong.

The group chose to support Forbes Can Assist as it was dear to their hearts with some of our group’s family members having been directly affected by cancer.

The event's monster raffle was drawn on the night, was well supported by local businesses and families who generously donated all 10 of the prizes.

First prize, a dressed lamb donated by the Walker family, was won by Sharon Rossiter; second prize, a car detailing voucher donated by Butlers Windscreens and Car Detailing, went to the Globe Hotel staff; Terry Bokeyar took out third prize, a hair care package; fourth prize another hair care pack went to Ray Scott; fifth prize a Find it in Forbes Gift Card was won by Peter Page; the second Find it in Forbes Gift Card went to Jodie Vonthien; Georgie Gallagher received a Bunnings Gift Card, Kevin Chen also won a Bunnings gift card; the second last prize was a car care gift pack and Jodie Vonthien was more than happy when her name was announced; the final prize of the night was a Tilley Gift pack which was won by Kevin Chen.

Event coordinator, Anita Morrison, commended the group on their efforts and congratulated the family and friends for the support shown to the debutantes and their partners.
