Boorowa Central School student, Hannah Southwell, has been announced as a Bronze winner in the Rowe Scientific Depth Study Award at the annual STA NSW Young Scientist awards.

Hannah was announced as a recipient last Tuesday during the Awards' virtual presentation.
Andrew Corcoran, Head Teacher of Agriculture, Mathematics, PDHPE and Science, congratulated Hannah on her achievement.
"This is an excellent result for Hannah and our school. Hannah is the first person to complete the new Science Extension course in our school and is currently the only student in the Yass network completing the course," he said.
"The awards criteria is for Year 11 and 12 practical investigations or secondary-sourced investigations that most effectively communicate how their depth study has enabled the student to develop and acquire a deeper knowledge and understanding of one or more clearly identified concepts.
"We are extremely proud of her efforts and excited to see her future project she is conducting in Science Extension next year."
In HSC Investigating Science, students were tasked with developing a hypothesis and conducting a major research project of their choosing.
Mr Corcoran said Hannah "completed extensive research on how human activity in an environment affected the number of bird species that were in that area".
"Hannah's results were very interesting and somewhat surprising, she found that there were a lot more birds when she counted them in town and at school, however, when she conducted her surveys in bushland areas, she spotted fewer birds but counted more separate species in the area," he said.
Hannah's research involved defining three areas that experience different levels of human activity and conducting 20-minute surveys, recording the number of each species of bird in the survey area.
"Congratulations to Hannah for her hard work," Mr Corcoran said.
"For her next project in science extension she is liaising with researchers from ANU and field researchers from Birdlife Australia to assist her in her project."
