The nursing team at Boorowa Multipurpose Service (MPS) has come away with a prestigious award at the 2021 Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) Excellence Awards.

The team were finalists in the "Our People Our Future" category whichrecognises the team for having showcased MLHD as the best place to work, lead, practice, volunteer, teach, learn and grow.

MLHD Chief Executive, Jill Ludford, said the nursing team had demonstrated its commitment to patient safety and ensuring they are highly skilled at what they do.

"Boorowa nurses strive for excellence and take pride in being able to shape the standards and quality of care," she said.

"They know that consumers of our health service getting the best possible outcome depends on staff working together, particularly when lives depend upon it."

Boorowa MPS has 24-hour Emergency Department which has telehealth cameras connecting local nurses to specialists through the Critical Care Advisory Service.

Each shift is staffed by one Registered Nurse, one Enrolled Nurse and one Assistant in Nursing.


Staff have to be resilient, knowledgeable and skilled to handle any type of emergency that could present at any time.

Since 2019, the nursing team has participated in weekly 60-minute scenario-based training exercises, which have had a positive impact in building nurses' ability to handle any type of emergency presentation at any time.

It was this training which saw the team nominated for the award. Scenario-based training puts learners in life-like situations to help them understand what actions produce desired results.

It enables staff to immerse themselves in a situation and practice new skills, which increases knowledge retention and builds confidence.

The sessions' content was determined by clinical presentations, clinical incidents, educational requirements and staff feedback.

An evaluation of staff who participated in the training over 12 months found 75 per cent felt more confident in the use of telehealth services and 80 per cent felt more confident dealing with emergency presentations.
