The Rye Park-Boorowa Red Cross Branch has launched an urgent appeal to residents in the district, calling for new members to join their ranks.

At the group's recent annual general meeting, it was decided that if no new members who were willing to take on positions were forthcoming, the branch would have to close.

Rye Park-Boorowa Red Cross Branch member Joy Cavenagh said closing the branch, which has been operating for nearly a century, would be a real loss for the district.

"This would be a very sad outcome as the branch has almost 100 years of history having been formed originally to help out the servicemen in two world wars," Joy said.

"There was a short recess between the world wars.

"It is hoped that some people from the district will come forward, otherwise at the September meeting the branch will finally close."

One of the branch's major problems is common in volunteer groups across regional and rural communities - an ageing membership with no younger people willing to put their hand up.

"For the past two years, members have been doing less catering and other activities, as the average age of members is approximately 79 years, but other fundraising has still taken place," Joy said.

Joy said the branch meets six times a year, with meetings held every second month and joining the Rye Park-Boorowa Red Cross Branch can provide numerous benefits for those looking to help out their community.

"The Branch has been a social friendship group meeting in members' homes alternatively and in venues in town as arranged," she said.

"The people of the Boorowa district have always been very supportive of Red Cross and not only have funds been raised for national appeals but also for local causes as well."
