Plastic bottle caps should not be put into kerbside recycling bins, and this means that they are becoming quite a significant factor in the 'war on waste'.
The church congregation feels that it is important to offer a service to the community which will benefit the whole environment, as well as giving people more options for reducing their own carbon footprint.
From Tuesday, November 3 the Recycle Cafe will be open in the church hall from 9am to 12 noon to receive plastic bottle caps (numbers 2, 4 and 5) to be donated to Lids4Kids.
Lids4Kids is a group which recycles lids into prosthetic limbs, and was originally formed in Canberra.
Bread tags/closure are collected for Aussie Breadtags for Wheelchairs, and will be sold to provide funds for wheelchairs for South Africa.
Soft plastics will be collected for transfer to REDcycle, an organisation which has bins at all Woolworths supermarkets, and recycle the plastics into benches, posts, road base, as well as other useful items.
Lids must be clean and dry when they are collected.
Preferably, any foam or cardboard inserts will have been removed and discarded.
While visitors are dropping off their recyclable materials, they will be welcome to stay and enjoy a cuppa, a piece of cake and a chat.
The congregation is encouraging people to make it a social time, and a chance to make new friends.
Social distancing and COVIDsafe compliance will be observed, but the friendliness will be genuine.
This is a project which will provide an opportunity for the church to offer a service to the community, to support worthy charitable causes, and promote friendship in our community.
