An additional case, acquired overseas and announced on Friday, is counted in today's reporting period.
One case reported in August has been excluded after further investigations.
That brings the total number of cases in NSW to 4084.
There were 15,439 tests recorded in the 24-hour reporting period to 8pm last night compared with 12,868 in the previous 24 hours.
The two locally transmitted cases are being investigated.
As reported yesterday, a crew member who acquired COVID-19 overseas arrived in the Port of Newcastle from Brisbane on a ship with international mariners aboard.
Further investigation and assessment by an expert panel has confirmed this case was an old infection. The crew member is well and has not been infectious since arriving in Australia from overseas. He has been discharged from John Hunter Hospital.
All other crew members have been tested and have returned negative results. They have been informed they are no longer required to isolate. It is important to note this case presented no COVID-19 risk to the people of Newcastle.
One of today's locally acquired cases, announced yesterday, is a nurse at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. The casual nurse worked a single evening shift on October 7 while infectious.
The nurse provided specialised care to a single patient and had limited contact with a very small number of her colleagues.
Contact tracing is continuing and the source of the infection is under investigation, although it is believed the infection occurred outside the hospital.
A second locally acquired case is linked to this case.
Health authorities are again urging people to get tested if they have mild symptoms, like a runny nose or scratchy throat, cough, fever or other symptoms that could be COVID-19.
