This weekend is the last round before the Xmas break and it probably can't come soon enough for the local teams, who will regroup and prepare for the second half of the season.
The Crocs travelled to sunny Bowning Oval on Saturday to face the struggling Bowning Buffaloes.
Boorowa bowled first and restricted Bowning to a reasonable 3/72 in the first 20 overs. However, a middle order revival courtesy of Beau Walker (55) and an unbeaten Andrew Swaffield (54) got the home side from a troublesome 5/82 to 6/189 off 40 overs. The best of the Boorowa bowlers was Josh Carmody with 3/29 off his eight overs, while Jacob Piper was very tight with 1/19 off his eight.
In reply, Boorowa overcame an early wicket to James Green, with Mat Ackland (63) and Josh Carmody (69) combining to produce a second wicket partnership of 139 runs to reach 1/141, and be in a winning position.
Despite requiring just 49 more runs, it all fell apart for the Crocs: They lost 9/37 to be all out for 178, with Carmody and Ackland the only players to reach double figures. It was a tough defeat for the team, who worked hard all day before the landslide happened.
Meanwhile, the Gators had a tough time of their own against the Yass Clubhouse Horns in Boorowa. The Clubhouse batted first and took the Boorowa bowlers apart early, reaching 4/169 in the first 20 overs. They were on track for 300 but Boorowa managed to stem the bleeding and restrict the Horns to 227.
Ben Klose (2/55), Archie Gay (2/41) and Phil Coggins (2/21) were the most successful of the Boorowa bowlers, with young guns Joe Prosper (1/31) and Harry Dymock (1/1) also successful wicket takers.
In reply, Boorowa were in all sorts of trouble at 4/20 before the middle order began to put some good partnerships together, with Russell George's century key to the fightback.
George and Joe Prosper put on 55 for the fifth wicket before Prosper departed for a well-made 23, as George combined for further partnerships with James Farrell and Phil Coggins to bring the Gators to 41 runs from victory with three overs left, allowing the home side to potentially dream of an unlikely come back.
However, Russell was dismissed for a fine 104, and at 7/188 it became a bridge too far for the remaining batsmen as Boorowa eventually finished at 7/204.
It was a brave effort by a very young team, combined with two or three old veterans, and there were plenty of positives to come out of the game. However, the side badly needs a win if they are to remain a chance of playing in the semis.
This weekend, the Crocs go on the road again to Victoria Park in Yass against the Yass Bowling Club Pirates. They will be hoping to break a three-game losing streak to remain in touch with the leaders over the Xmas break.
Meanwhile, the Gators have their third straight game at home against the Harden Hornets, who they have already played once this season. On that occasion, the Hornets prevailed by 60 runs on the turf in Harden.
The Xmas break will commence after this week with teams not recommencing competition until January 11. Hopefully both teams can win this week and fill their Xmas stockings with a few extra competition points.
With another fine weekend predicted, why not head to Bay 13 at the Boorowa Recreation Ground and catch all the cricket action commencing at 12.30 pm.
