A couple of years ago two widows, Jan Poplin and Esma Berry, got their heads together not wanting to sit around lamenting their loss. They realized they were not alone in their loss and decided to do something that would not only benefit them, but all the other widows in town and district. So 'The Merry Widows' came into being.
Jan and Esma invited all the widows to join them in a social lunch. Every third month, this group meets at a different local eating place and enjoys itself.
Jan has sadly passed on, but Esma carries on and they will meet again on Thursday May 9, 12 noon, in the Magistrates Tea Room in the old courthouse. I believe that even widowers are now welcome which is a very nice gesture.
Esma invites all widows and widowers to join them, all she needs to know is your intention to attend by Tuesday prior (May 7). Give her a ring on 63856221.

Not many families, if any, could say they've never been touched by cancer. Forunately much is done with charities coming forward to support treatment and research. The McGrath Foundation does a fabulous job, but locals hop in and do their bit with many people hosting 'Australia's Biggest Morning Tea' to support the Cancer Council.
Sheree Darmody has for years hosted such a morning tea out at Wantana, but this year Sina Banks and Jayne Curlewis have hopped in to host the morning tea.
You're invited to attend at the Banks' household, 183 Rugby Road Boorowa, 10am Saturday, May 11. RSVP is by May 4 on 0429 004 245 or Email sina.banks@bigpond.com.
Donations can be made on this day with cheques payable to NSW Cancer Council. There will also be raffles on the day.
Get along, take your money, enjoy the tea and help to beat cancer.

Boorowa Council used to do an annual tour of the villages of Frogmore, Reids Flat, Rye Park and Rugby, a day that allowed the residents to openly discuss their concerns with the councilors. It is very pleasing to see Hilltops Council has undertaken a similar exercise, though of course, it entails visiting far more villages.
A village workshop is planned for Rugby Wednesday, May 15, in the Rugby Hall. There will be a BBQ at 6pm with the workshop to commence at 6.30pm.
Don't let the opportunity pass by as it offers a great chance to meet Hilltops Councillors and staff and express your ideas or concerns about Council related matters.
With amalgamation there was a fear the more remote villages would be forgotten, this initiative shows this is not necessarily so.

With the ever popular Picnic Races on this Saturday, May 4, I can only hope the punters go home with pockets full of cash and the bookies with long faces. Win or lose, all racegoers will only have themselves to blame if they don't have a great day.
The gates open at 11am with the first race to be run at 1pm. Good luck.
