At this time of year bird watching is a major focus as Superb Parrots are raising young within hollows within old, Eucalyptus trees and collecting copious amounts of food to feed their young.
Superb Parrots prefer to nest in tree hollows, such hollows can take over 100 years to form and often only exist in mature paddock trees.
Thus one of the key messages which the Boorowa Community Landcare group wishes to convey to the public is the importance of protecting paddock trees especially those with hollows.
Humans have favourite foods so do Superb Parrots who seek out a range of grasses and crop seed; mistletoe, and seed pods from a number of locally grown wattles including Cootamundra, Silver, Deane’s and Red Stem wattle and Hop bush plants.
Superb Parrots also enjoy the flower buds and seed capsules from Yellow Box, River Red Gums and Grey Box.
The Superb Parrot is a bright green parrot with a long, narrow tail, sharply back-angled wing and an aerodynamic body for fast flight and it is approximately 40cms long.
Slow down if you see birds on the road side as young Superb Parrots are not experienced in road side escape techniques.
If you see split grain on a roadside please report it to the Hilltops Council so that it can be removed.
Boorowa Community Landcare will be giving out free Superb Parrot food plants at the 2019 Boorowa Show if you visit their stall.
If you would like to obtain information on the importance of retaining and protecting Paddock Trees or a full listing of Superb Parrot food plants provided by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage please email Kath McGuirk at kangiara@gmail.com
