Carmody’s 134-run partnership with Peter Guthrie has helped Cowra District’s representative side defend the Grinsted Cup against Young, despite a scare late in the innings.
The victory, played at Twigg Oval in Cowra, wasn’t necessarily assured. Despite chasing a modest Young score of 7/195, two early wickets to Cal Taylor left Cowra reeling at 2/29.
Enter Carmody and Guthrie, (78 not out) who laid the groundwork for victory with a steady turnover of the strike.
Young were hapless at times in the field, with numerous dropped catches and missed balls created unlikely opportunities for runs.
Eventually Young’s fielding sharpened up, as Mick Ashton’s dismissal of Carmody triggered a mini-collapse, with dismissals of Thomas Thuaux and Jacob McNaught, leaving Cowra at 5/172 and 24 needed for victory.
However, Guthrie and Ben Houghton dashed any hopes of a surprise win to the visitors, successfully running down the final total with two and a half overs remaining.
While Guthrie was quick to make mention of Carmody, he also mentioned Jacob McNaught, who produced Cowra’s best bowling figures of the day with 2/24.
“He bowled really well… he said that’s the most he’s bowled in a couple of seasons,” Guthrie observed.
