The NSW Government's Saving Our Species (SoS) program is providing nearly $400,000 to help farmers and land managers look after hollow-bearing trees and woodland vegetation and to replant trees and shrubs for the future, which will also contribute to sustainable farming ecosystems.
As one of the Landcare groups involved with the SoS Saving Our Superb Parrot project, BCLG will help protect and restore key habitat for the Superb Parrot by protecting living and dead paddock trees and fencing existing woodland remnants.
As part of this project Boorowa Community Landcare Group are offering eligible landholders (who are current financial members of BCLG) funding support to:
- Fence off paddock trees (living or dead) minimum area of 20m x 20m and planting of understorey. Priority will be given to projects that fence off known or suitable Superb Parrot nest trees. Trees that are fenced must be within 50-100m of other trees (dead or alive) and/or woodland.
- Fence off existing box gum woodland which allows strategic grazing management that improves overall habitat quality.
General considerations for existing paddock tree protection fencing:
- Fencing of single paddock trees or a small clump of 3-5 trees with hollows (dead or alive) particularly if they are known nesting sites.
- appropriate stock proof erected around each tree should extend beyond the canopy dripline or further.
- allow enough room for planting of at least one paddock tree (if existing tree is dead) and shrubs that will provide foraging habitat for the Superb Parrot and also habitat for smaller woodland birds.
- natural regeneration of seedlings within the fenced area is allowed, but there should also be shrubs planted.
BCLG will subsidise your project up to $6/metre fencing and $3.50/tube stock trees and shrubs.
Landholders are required to contribute by installing the fence and planting tube stock.
Interested landholders should check the attached map to ensure you are within (or close to) the area covered by this project.

BCLG are also excited to host an information session on Wednesday, August 29 for landholders and interested members of the community, to identify actions for on-ground works that help save the threatened Superb Parrot.
Speakers Include:
- Damon Oliver (OEH) will talk about the threatened species program and particular actions important for the Superb Parrot.
- A paddock walk through the Bennet Springs TSR Susie Jackson (OEH), Mikla Lewis (Young-Weddin Landcare) and Graham Fifield (Greening Australia), will help identify habitat suitable for protection and restoration to protect breeding and foraging habitat for the Superb Parrot.
The information session will be held at the Graham Fire Shed, 105 Bennet Springs Rd, Hovells Creek.
