Tough loss for Goldies at the hands of Gungahlin

Last Saturday, the Goldies made the trip to Gungahlin to take on the Bald Eagles.

With below zero temperatures, more than two inches of snow on the paddock and a very strong gale, the Goldies knew it was going to be a tough evening.

However, with a full team and a few on the bench, the boys were primed and raring to go.

Sadly, like weeks gone by, the Goldies got off to a very slow start, leaking three tries.

The boys were finding it very hard to exit out of their own half and a few unforced errors were not helping them.

However, the Goldies started to come to life late in the first half.

Mark “Redser” Poplin finished off a great break up the middle from Ryan “Random” Simpson.

Great team try.

Just on the stroke of halftime, Tom the Pom got stripped of the ball as he was over the line.

Bloody English…

The second half was all about the Ryans.

A massive day for the family, Vinnie turning 21, Nick back from the big smoke for the big bash, Gerald “Delta” Ryan also taking to pitch with his favourite brother Vinnie, dad Jack who played all the second half at fullback and Grace and Trish built a snow man on the sideline during halftime.

Different but a nice day for them!

The Goldies had a much better second half with Vinnie “Birdy” Ryan charging a kick down then pouncing on the ball to make it 14-24.

Soon after rampaging Richard Fleming sniped an intercept to bring the Goldies back in the game at 21-24.

Gungahlin settled slightly with a pushover try to take the game back out to 21-31.

However with five minutes left, the Goldies were never going to say die, with Vinnie 'It’s My 21st Tonight" Ryan scoring another try to claw back and got us back with three points.

The Goldies went on the attack in the last play to snatch the win. They were on the line pushing for the win, however a controversial holding off the ball penalty was awarded against us and this stole what could of been a great comeback.

It was another gallant defeat to the Goldies, whom can hold their heads high.

Three points where shared by Jeremy Dev and Micheal Berry whom both worked all game and put some devastating hits on in defence.

One point went to Brendan McGrath with another solid game.

Players’ Player went to Vinnie Ryan.

This weekend we play Batemans Bay at home (thank the lord).

Kick off is at the usual time, whatever time the usual time is… I really haven’t a clue.

So make sure you get there to cheers the boys on and come for a beer at the Top Pub after.

Wally has promised to shout everyone a Rum and Coke. Thanks Wal…
