North Sydney Bushcare staff and volunteers have been coming to Boorowa for over eighteen years to plant tree lanes.
This visit is the second year that Boorowa Community Landcare Group with sponsorship from Hilltops Council have transported Boorowa students to experience sustainability measures in a city environment.
The location of the Coal Loader at North Sydney with views of Sydney Harbour also provides a totally different environment to that normally experienced by Boorowa students.
Over the two day visit students participated in a bush walk in the pouring rain, ably lead by Tristram Thomas from North Sydney Bushcare who explained both the indigenous history and culture of Balls Head.
They slept in sleeping bags on mats on the floor and of course the State of Origin was a mandatory viewing requirement.
The second day saw students mapping out the walking route to walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, undertake a tour of the Rocks and Circular Quay.
A ferry ride brought the party back to Cremorne Point, where the North Sydney Bushcare bus returned them to the Coal Loader site.
The final task was to make solar buddies (lights) to help reduce energy poverty for a community in the Kupiano region of Central Province in Papua New Guinea.
The students assembled the solar powered and lights and also wrote an accompanying letter to share more about themselves to begin what is hoped will be the start of a cultural exchange between the two communities.
This trip was generously funded by the Hilltops Council Community Grant submitted by Boorowa Community Landcare in an attempt to strengthen the relationship between Boorowa and North Sydney Bushcare.
The program, food and accommodation was generously organised by North Sydney Bushcare.
Finally thank you to the students and teachers who agreed to work with Boorowa Community Landcare to make this trip possible.
