The Ex-Services Club Tuesday evening of last week was awash with people. I walked in thinking surely all these people can’t be attending the Australia Day Committee meeting. They weren’t.

A large roll up formalized the establishment of Boorowa’s newest club, the Boorowa Car Club. They’ve been working up to this moment for a couple of months, and now the requirements from the controlling body have been met, voila, they’re away.
The Boorowa Car Club meets the second Tuesday of each month, 7.00pm at the Ex-Services Club.
The Club caters for historic (30yr +) car buffs or plain and simple car/bike enthusiasts. They plan to stage monthly car runs with the first this coming Sunday May 20.
For further information contact President Angus Mitchell on 0412 223 702 or call in at the Pallet Furniture Shop, Brae Neuk, and have a yarn with Secretary Karen.

Mentioning Australia Day, there was a well attended committee meeting last Tuesday week and organization for the 2019 event is well under way.
Importantly, we acknowledge people in our Australia Day Awards that do special things in our town and district. The Committee is aware of many of these people, but not all. This is where you come into play. If you know of a person doing wonderful things, let the committee know.
For information about, or information for, the Boorowa Australia Day Committee, contact Janene Hurley 63851330 or myself 0428 853 348. New members and ideas always welcome.

Big business and small communities don’t go hand in hand so it seems. Boorowa loses another service when the NRMA Agency closes after June 30, making it that little more difficult for many to pay their insurances and membership.
Business want to push people into electronic transactions. I can assure you there are many people in Boorowa who will miss the personal service provided by the local agency, the opportunity to have their policies explained, because, to many, policies are written with so much gobbledygook, many need that personal explanation in order to rest assured their needs are fully covered.
NRMA is supposed to be for the people, but like the big banks, the only ones they seem to care about are the shareholders – a sorry indictment of modern society.

Dumb becomes dumber. When his .38 caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a hold-up in Long Beach, California, the would be robber, James Elliott, did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again. This time it worked.

In the column of February 8 this year, I quoted Roman politician/lawyer Cicero’s advice from 55BC – that’s 2073 years ago. The gist of what he said was the budget should be balanced, the Treasury refilled, public debt reduced, assistance to foreign lands curtailed and people must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance.
I don’t want to get into budget 2018, but do wonder where, in relation to these ancient words, we’ve gone so wrong.
Is it because one side says we’ll give you this, then the other counters with we’ll match that and give you more, then the first side counters …? Have I just come up with a definition of ‘Down! Down! Down!’ Consider:
“If experience teaches us anything at all, it teaches us this: that a good politician, under democracy, is quite as unthinkable as an honest burglar.” (H L Mencken)
