Pioneering Landcarer’s Peter and Elizabeth Mason have been planting native trees and shrubs on 'Hawkhill', as part of their farm plan, for nearly 35 years.
Starting in 1983 they have only missed one year due to drought. Elizabeth has propagated thousands of trees herself over the years, but now buys them from commercial growers.
Visitors will see plantings of various ages, shapes and sizes which have been designed to rehabilitate degraded land; mitigating the effects of dryland salinity and preventing further erosion.
The plantings also provide valuable livestock shelter and habitat for a variety of native animals.
A drive to the top of 'Hawkhill', (our local OPTUS tower) will offer a rare opportunity to appreciate the scale and connectivity of local plantings and provide visitors with excellent views of the district.
Come and find out what has been tried, what works and what hasn't worked, from a local couple with a wealth of experience. A BBQ lunch will be available.
