Keeping our stories alive in Galong

This is an exciting opportunity to spend a weekend exploring a whole range of history topics and it’s just down the track at Galong.

“Do join us for a weekend gathering of people interested in family and local history, archives and museums and in Australian history generally,” Cheryl Mongan, President of Yass & District Historical Society said.

“An added bonus is our venue. It’s a wonderful historic setting in one of southern NSW’s oldest surviving rural properties, now a conference centre and retreat.”

It’s all happening Friday, March 2 to Sunday, March 4, 2018 at St. Clements Conference Centre, Galong.

Thirteen speakers bring heaps of enthusiasm as well as many years of experience and expertise to the program.

What letters can tell us about our history, what one school’s history can teach us, caring for archives, film, video, sound recordings, documents and historical objects are just some of the topics to be covered.

Speakers include Professor Mark McKenna speaking about the research for his award winning book ‘Looking for Blackfella’s Point’ and Dr. Matthew Trinca, Director of our National Museum in Canberra will give us a national perspective “Reconnecting History and Heritage in Communities”.

“And it’s not all talk,” Cheryl said.

“Saturday night is a highlight with entertainment, drinks and a delicious three course candlelit dinner in historic ‘Galong House’. Built in 1850 by the legendary Ned Ryan, the house was the scene for his generous hospitality. Our dinner continues this tradition.”

Genevieve Jacobs, formerly of ABC Canberra will be the after dinner speaker.
