Les Winters, in the prime of his life at 78 years of age, successfully took four world records at the Global Power-lifting Committee National Titles.
Les’ four records came in the 75-79 year old age bracket and included a bench press at 62.5kgs, an 85kg squat and a 160kg deadlift.
Les, who was the oldest competitor on the day, was successful on all three attempts at the bench press, first at 50kgs, then 57.5kg on the second attempt and then a record-breaking 62.5kgs on the third.
He also managed his squats successfully on all three attempts, first at 65kg, then 75kg and finally 85kgs on the third attempt for the world record.
He was not successful at this first attempt at 160kgs in the deadlift, however managed to successfully lift the weight on the second attempt.
Les attempted 170kgs on the third attempt at the deadlift however was unsuccessful.
These three efforts are then combined to make the fourth record, a 307.5kg world record total.
Les has been doing this for three and a half years under the guidance of grandson Brendan Shean. His first competition was in October 2016 as a novice, not bad at 77 years of age.
Brendan took him over to a Canberra gym to give him a feel of what he could expect before the competition.
A young chap was working out in the gym, doing a deadlift of 160kg and doing it tough.
Les grabbed 170kgs and took it straight up.
The whole gym was amazed and stood as one to applaud the effort.
In Les’ mind, the sky’s the limit and now he looks forward to going back and smashing his world records, especially his deadlift having lifted 190kgs in training, a huge 30kg more than his world record.
In Les’ mind, the sky’s the limit and now he looks forward to smashing his world records.
