Visitors to the Hilltops Region are pumping a massive $79 million into the local economy every year, with recent figures revealing the significant windfall being generated by the region’s growing tourism sector.

Hilltops Mayor Brian Ingram said the findings from Tourism Research Australia, highlight the important contribution the tourism sector is making to the Hilltops economy, both directly and indirectly.
“What these figures show is that more and more people from outside the region are discovering the rich experiences Hilltops has to offer,” Mayor Ingram said.
“From our fantastic local produce, to our rich cultural and heritage attractions, people from around Australia and overseas are clearly hearing the message about Hilltops and are experiencing our wonderful region for themselves.
“While domestic travellers are outstaying international guests, both spend a significant sum of money during their stay; those visiting from overseas spend on average just over $900 per trip, while those visiting from other parts of Australia spend close to $350 per trip.
“Visitors who come and spend the day are also digging deep, spending on average $100 while they’re here.
“More than 200 people are employed directly in the tourism sector locally, but of course, there are hundreds more that are involved indirectly, and it’s this kind of positive flow-on effect – along with the direct tourism spend – that benefits the entire community,” he said.
Mayor Ingram said the release of the figures coincides with the launch of the new Canberra Region website, which showcases what’s on offer across the entire area.
“The new Canberra Region website is a fantastic marketing tool for us; it’s all about harnessing the individual strengths of each individual member council in a way that benefits the broader region,” Mayor Ingram said.
“The launch, held at the Canberra Airport on Monday, was a great success. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr was on hand to officially launch the website and spoke about the importance of regional collaboration when it comes to things like making the most of export opportunities for our vital agricultural industry, and attracting visitors to the area.
“NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro was also there and reinforced the fact that when we all work together, we can leverage our unique capabilities in a way that benefits everyone.
“Hilltops is certainly proud to be a part of this initiative; it’s one that will help our tourism operators and local producers – including those who were on hand at the website launch to showcase the region’s wares – with the positive flow-on effects rippling throughout the entire Hilltops area,” he said.
