The main objective of the program is to create habitat for our iconic Superb Parrot.
Significantly, it also creates habitat for many other bird species, shelter for livestock and helps to mitigate the effects of dryland salinity.
During this year’s event, 35 Bushcare volunteers and six staff, assisted by BCLG members, planted over 6,000 native trees and shrubs, over six sites.
The weather was sensational with golden canola, and wattles in full bloom.
Landholders participating in this year’s native plantings, fence and prepare their planting sites, source trees and tree guards, feed the volunteers on site and contributes dollars to a thank you dinner.
Eighty volunteers and BCLG members attended the thank you dinner at the Boorowa Recreation Club on Saturday night.
The Recreation Club was decorated with local produce and fleeces and tourist information, and all tables were decorated with local native plant displays.
The highlight of the night was recognition of this 18th year relationship by Hon Pru Goward, Member for Goulburn and Mrs. Wendy Tuckerman who was soon to be elected onto the new Hilltops Council.
Diners were then shown drone footage of the ‘Hawk Hill’ property which buzzed planters during that planting.
The drone photos showed the current planting plus many more which had been planted in previous years through this “Building Bridges to Boorowa” program.
BCLG would like to thank:
- the NSBG volunteers and North Sydney Council for assisting local landholders with their revegetation projects
- Hilltops Council for their financial contribution towards the thankyou dinner and use of Council portaloo over the weekend.
Landholders who participated in the 2017 plantings included:
- Peter and Elizabeth Mason of ‘Hawk Hill’
- Alan and Eileen Sargent of ‘Rosewood’
- Bill and Annabel Scott of ‘Gembrook’
- Charlie Arnott and manager Rob Young of ‘Hanaminno’
- Sam Burton-Taylor of ‘Badenville’
- Kathryn and Richard McGuirk of ‘Kangiara’.
We encourage past hosts to send in photos of sites planted by NSBC so we can forward the photos onto volunteers.
The next major event that the Boorowa Community Landcare group will be hosting is on November 4 at Sharman and Geoff Darnell property on Rye Park Road.
We will be celebrating an Environmental Trust Grant that the group recently won titled ‘Creating Land for Superb Parrots and Pygmy Perch’.
