It’s been a long time coming, over twelve months worth of planning and finally the big day has nearly arrived. The event is set to take its place on the Australian Rodeo Circuit and is now an annual event drawing competitors Australia wide, none more so than local seasoned rodeo athletes Troy Cross of Boorowa and Matt Darmody of Yass.
The event will take place at the Rec Club Grounds at 4pm on Saturday of the Irish Wool Fest, September 30. Admission to the event will open to the public from 2pm, with the bar and hot food available along with kids entertainment.
The event is set to host:
- Saddle Bronc riding the original rodeo event where it all began many many years ago.
- Bareback Bronc riding the suicide event of rodeo, where contestants hold on with just a suitcase type handle with no control over the horse at all.
- Bull Riding, the event was never really apart of ranching when rodeo began, but somewhere along the line one cowboy looked at the other and said “I bet I can stay on that bull longer than you can” and the rest is history. Nowadays a bull rider at the top of his game in America can be earning well over one million dollars a year.
The rodeo stock will be supplied by Professional Rodeo Stock Contractor John Gill and Sons from The Rock, who have a full trophy case of awards for their prize bucking stock. They had the only bull to ever challenge “Chainsaw” back in the 80’s and 90’s, “Bambi” whose blood lines have since gone on to raise some of the toughest and most feared rodeo bulls in Australia.
They were recognised most recently with their bull “Warchief” for Australian Champion bucking bull in 2013 and their high flying sensation “Akubra Suicidal” for the Champion of Champions, Bucking Bull of the National Finals in 2014 against the best rodeo bulls in Australia.
This year, a feature bull will be offered to the winner of the Open bull ride. The cowboy will have the opportunity to earn $100 per every second he can ride the meanest bucking bull on the circuit. If he can stay on for the full eight seconds he will walk away with a cheque for $3000.
Well known rodeo contractor Rick Wilson will this year supply the rankest bucking horses, with the addition of a $1000 feature horse. The saddle bronc riders will go into the hat to have a chance to win the money. Following the rodeo, the party will continue back at the Court House Hotel.
With limited grandstand seating, it is recommended you bring a chair or get your seat early, although there will be an enormous amount of space to fit everyone in. Cheaper adult tickets are for sale at Carmody’s Newsagency or the Information Centre.
