In the Boorowa News and on 2LF’s local news last week Interim Hilltops general manager Anthony McMahon made it clear that with the September Council election looming, now is the time to consider your candidacy.

Candidates must consider what they stand for and must look at establishing some kind of profile in the broader community.
We are fortunate that our council will not be comprised of politically aligned councillors, but instead will be a council of eleven independent individuals focused on taking Hilltops Council, as a whole, into we all hope, a bright and successful future.
Derrick Mason in a letter to the Editor last week, stated, “We don’t need ‘yes’ men or women making themselves ‘tools’ of the state government”. Agreed.
Anthony McMahon has put the case for potential candidates and voters to really prepare themselves for this election of the inaugural Hilltops Council. Derrick has put his views forward, as have I. We all should get a dialogue going.
We’re only four months out from a very important election. The more we talk about it, hopefully, the more chance we have of electing eleven people possessing the best qualities to take on this huge responsibility. All we can ask for is good vision, good debate, good governance and, probably, good luck.

Kids can surprise. Art Linkletter, interviewing a ten year old girl on his once popular TV Show, asked what her first act would be if she was elected President of the United States. The Youngster gazed at him in stunned horror for a second, then replied, “Have the voters’ heads examined.”

June brings Winter (Summer in Northern Hemisphere) and another little known historical fact.
In the 1500’s most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June.
However, since they were starting to smell, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour, hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

I went to the Hilltops Economic Development meeting and workshop last Thursday evening June 25. The consultant running the meeting posed three questions that each group worked on and then reported back.
I’ve been to several such sessions and seem to get asked similar questions with very similar responses. Maybe nothing much seems to stem from such sessions.
Never before has a consultancy firm had to pull the views of three council areas into one. We’ll be presented with a draft to peruse, but I only hope the final document fully addresses the challenges and issues the new council will face.

One thing that came out quite clear was the need to have a strong, progressive community group voicing our concerns and ideas. Boorowa has such a group with the ‘Boorowa Business Chamber’.
This group needs the support of all Boorowa businesses and the community as a whole . The makeup of Septembers newly elected council could add greater urgency to this need.

As we move on toward September, we could heed the words of Winston Churchill, “If we open a quarrel between the past and the present, we shall find we have lost the future.”
Consider:
“I object to people running down the future, I am going to live the rest of my life there, and I’d like it to be nice”. (Charles F Kettering)
