Knitters, crocheters and felters are stitching up a storm in preparation for the inaugural 2014 Boorowa Woolfest Beanie, Beret and Tea Cosy Competition.

Based on a similar competition in Alice Springs, organisers Lyn Diskon and Lorraine Follett are hoping the competition will inspire locals and knitters from further afield to create a crop of crazy hats.

"It's just another element of interest for the Woolfest," Ms Diskon said.

"I think it's an opportunity for people to experiment with wool innovatively and imaginatively but also for people to have fun and contribute to the Woolfest," Ms Follett added.

"Lots of other towns have events where crafts are more in focus and with the amount of talent in Boorowa, it's time we did too."

Although the competition is a part of the Woolfest, entries don't have to be made of wool - acrylic yarn is fine, said Ms Diskon.

"We're really looking to encourage people's creativity, it's just a bit of fun," she said.

Categories include Irish/ Australiana beanies; stitching prizes for exquisite crochet; knitting or other stitch-based beanies, recycled / Earth-friendly beanies using recycled materials, hand spun, or natural dyes; tea cosy; kid's aged 11 and under; youths aged 12 to 18 years; and people's choice.

The beanies will be on public exhibition from Friday, October 3 until Tuesday, October 7.

Entries cost $2 per adult and $1 per person aged under 15 years and close on Friday, September 19. You can enter up to 10 beanies, berets or tea cosies and nominate them for a sale price of up to $120 per beanie, including commission. Twenty per cent of all sales, as well as entry fees and donations, will go to supporting the Boorowa Historical Society.

Organisers are also seeking volunteers to help set up and run the public display over the weekend of the Woolfest. For more information please contact Fibre Filia, Marsden Street Boorowa or phone Lyn on 0427 900 313.
