Local sheep breeder Melissa Henry, of Quebon Coloured Sheep, gained her first major show award when her four tooth Corriedale won Grand Champion Ram in the Black and Coloured Sheep section. 

In only the second year the show has run the section, Ms Henry’s ram was awarded for its structural soundness, the softness and quality of its wool crimp, and its frame. 

The Binalong Rd resident said she hopes the win will be the first of many. 

“My goal is to increase stock quality with better genetics,” she said.

After moving to Boorowa from the Hawkesbury two years ago she has expanded her flock to 40. 

Merryville stud won the Supreme Fine Wool and Supreme Super Fine Wool categories and was named most successful exhibitor in the merino section.

George Merriman of Merryville said it was one of the stud’s stronger showings. 

“That’s two of three supreme awards, which is very hard to attain, to get two in the same year,” he said. 

Springwaters took Supreme Interbreed Ram, Champion Poll Dorset Ram and Reserve Champion Poll Dorset Ewe. 

It was judged most successful exhibitor in the poll dorset section. 

Dennis Rowley of Springwaters said the stud has continued its run of good results since it won most successful exhibitor at a national show and sale in Bendigo last October. 

“It’s really good to start off this year carrying on in the same sort of vein,” he said. 

Local merino stud Tara Park took Best Pair March Shorn, Supreme Merino Medium Wool, Champion Medium Wool Ram & Ewe, and Reserve Champion Fine Wool Ram & Ewe in Canberra. 

Merryville, Tara Park and Springwaters studs will enter their sheep at this weekend’s Boorowa Show. 

Mr Rowley said most of the Royal Canberra Show’s top sheep will appear at Boorowa’s annual event. 

“People don’t realise how strong Boorowa is, it is a great show. It’s going from strength to strength. There are strong line ups in merinos and British breeds,” he said.
