This workshop celebrates the official start of a Box Gum Woodland habitat protection and expansion project in the Rye Park region.
The prime focus of this event is on the identification and protection of habitat for Boorowa’s iconic Superb Parrot and fellow woodland birds.
For early starters the Boorowa Community Landcare group are hosting a walk through mature tree lanes at the Darnell property from 8am with bird identification guru Nicki Tawes from Greening Australia Canberra Office.
After the bird ID walk breakfast will be provided to participants.
Those who want a later start and are interested in how to protect and develop new habitat for woodland birds, we will start our guest speakers at 10am to hear the latest research and sighting information from Damon Oliver from NSW Environment and Heritage on Superb Parrots and other threatened species woodland birds.
Damon will be followed by Lesley Peden who will discuss the benefits of having a Land for Wildlife assessment undertaken on a rural property in that the landowner will be provided with a listing of trees, understory and grasses on site, and Lesley can provide advice on future grant options which the landholder may be eligible to apply for.
Our bird guru Nicki Taws will complete the speaking agenda detailing how to create large scale bird friendly habitat on a rural property, however a number of the vegetation and habitat ideas could also apply for the residential gardener.
The final activity will be a walk through the tree lanes on the Darnell property and across the Pudman Creek banks where our three guest speakers will take small groups and attempt to identify trees, shrubs and grasses growing in the area.

The next event to be held by the Boorowa Community Landcare group will be our Annual General Meeting which will be held on Thursday 9 November at the Ex-Service Men’s Club from 6pm.
Daniel Florance - Senior Research Officer for the Conservation and Landscape Ecology Group, Fenner School of Environment and Society, The Australian National University will be the guest speaker on ‘Reptile Conservation in The Agricultural Landscape’.
