As most residents would be aware, there are three state roads and one national road passing through the Hilltops Council region, with sections of the Lachlan Valley Way, the Olympic Way, the Burley Griffin Way and the Hume Highway all located in our Council area.

What some may not realise though is that the NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) – and not Council – manages the state road network in NSW.
Council carries out routine maintenance and often ‘works orders’ on these roads under a contractual arrangement with the RMS, however it’s important to understand the decisions made on these roads are done so by the RMS, who have the sole authority to publicly release the specifics of any projects.
That aside, these state roads together with our network of local roads, form a vital transport grid that underpins both our social and economic sustainability.
Working to ensure the thousands of kilometres of local roads in the Hilltops Council area are able to cope with the increasing demands a thriving growth centre like ours presents, is a constant focus for Council, with both major and minor projects often underway simultaneously.
As such, Council makes representations to governments and is continually reviewing the funding grants available state and federally for spending on roads, carefully planning applications and project proposals to ensure much needed grant funding lines-up and provides maximum impact where it’s needed most.
For example, in recent years the Council area has successfully secured funding under the ‘Fixing Country Roads’ program, which has gone towards Burrangong Creek Bridge as well as the Murringo Road and Cunningar Road upgrades, with Council currently in the process of preparing a bid for a share of the $100 million made available by the State Government recently under round three of the program.
Given the nature of road infrastructure, it’s a constant work in progress; one that has Council’s full and ongoing attention.
