For many decades the tennis club (formally known as St. John’s Tennis Club) has played tennis at the St. John’s Anglican Church site in Farm Street.
Many locals will recall many a late night when tennis was played regularly in its twilight years, with many divisions and players playing regularly, even two or three times a week late into the night.
Over the years the club’s player numbers have dwindle along with the club’s facilities.
The club has been renting the courts from St. Johns for a number of years and with higher maintenance costs the club has been struggling to maintain its facilities.
The club house is in need of an upgrade and the lighting system is outdated, costly to maintain and expensive to run.
As the courts are privately owned it is difficult, if not impossible to attract any funding to support and maintain the club.
Hence, the new project at the Boorowa Showgrounds to develop a community owned tennis centre.
The Boorowa Tennis Club is looking for new players to join its autumn social tennis competitions.
At this stage the club has only social tennis on Monday nights but would love to start more competitions if the community shows interest.
Social Tennis will commence on Monday, February 27 at 6pm.
The Boorowa Tennis Club Inc. AGM will take place on Monday, March 13 at 6pm at the courts in Farm Street and any new players interested in assisting with a new committee are most welcome.
Any interested players should just show up at the courts at St. John’s in Farm Street or contact Paul Corcoran, Anne Johnson or Sue Corcoran.
Junior Tennis will commence on Thursday, March 2 from 4pm till 5pm.
Cost will be $10 per child per session.
Any parents wishing for their children to participate in Junior Tennis should contact Paul Corcoran on 0447 159 407.
The tennis club has started fundraising for the new tennis complex and would like the support of the community to make its vision of new courts at the showgrounds come to fruition.
The club is busy applying for grants and will be undertaking fundraising activities over this coming year to secure the funding for this new project for the Boorowa community.
