Referring to the ridiculous Senate Ballot Paper we experienced in the recent elections, I made the statement that change was required in the matters of restricting the nominations and the voting itself. Interestingly, there is only a 500 person threshold to establish a political party in Australia, which equates to 0.00003 percent of registered voters.

I liked the suggestion to increase party membership numbers across Australia to 5000 before a party can be registered with the Australian Electoral Commission, or, in a particular state or territory 1000 before a party can be registered.
Such change would make it difficult to register single issue parties and a further suggestion to test political aspirants on their party’s capacity to engage with the community would again make registration of a minor party more difficult.
The Senate is the House of Review, the umpire so to speak. When considering legislation coming to them from the Lower House, we need people representing us with a realistic grasp of the needs of the people, open minded people, not single minded minorities.

As we age and enter the ‘Wonder Years’ one concern is holding on to our driver’s licence.
One little old lady was really chuffed telling a friend, “Somebody actually complimented me on my driving today and left a lovely note on my windscreen, it said ‘Parking Fine’, so that was nice.”

One thing I did get right last week was the prediction we wouldn’t have an election result at your time of reading.
We almost had a result after a week but still the count goes on.
Really, we are well into the 21st Century and surely technology is there to facilitate a quicker resolution, at the moment it seems we’re locked into a 19th Century system.
Could it be that computers can’t handle preferential voting? Surely not.

To be a little fair, we didn’t have to wait long on election night to realise that Angus Taylor had been returned for a second term. Congratulations to Angus on a comfortable win and seemingly to serve in a Turnbull led majority government – if they ever finish the count.
