South West Slopes Shooters came about in mid 2014 to meet the needs of local rifle and pistol shooters.
The Club is an autonomous Sub Committee of Shooters Union of NSW Inc. and comes under the umbrella of Shooters Union Australia, one of Australia's largest shooting organizations.
"Since 2012 we have been looking for a suitable site to establish a shooting range and we found that location in May of 2015. Since then it has been full on to get the required approvals and paperwork for full and final approval," Chairman Mike Crockford said.
The range is six kilometers from Boorowa township, well away to ensure that noise is never a problem, but close enough for staying overnight or to access food, fuel and shopping.
We hope that the range will draw other shooters into town and Boorowa as a whole will benefit from extra visitors.
The NSW Police Firearms Registry attended the suggested site on February 2 this year and OK'd the location as being suitable, and actually better than we expected.
The Club then submitted a development application to Boorowa Council and that was subsequently approved on March 21.
We have since changed our minds on a couple of things and now have to submit an amendment to the Council condition, then the 'construction' can commence.
Once complete, the "final approval" is applied for and we can start shooting competitions and matches.
The Club range will be 200 yards long in total and will cater for rifle, pistol and shotgun matches.
It will be a simple setup, which may grow during future years.
The range will also be available for Archery use should an Archery club develop within the region or as a School Sport event.
Being a very small club our finances are extremely limited to current membership fees so we have launched a GoFundMe (crowd funding) program [https://www.gofundme.com/SUNSW1] to help raise the necessary funds.
Please consider donating.
Corporate sponsorship is also welcomed.
We are also opening up for more members but will be limiting the numbers so we can maintain the sociable aspect.
We prefer to be a social club, which happens to target shoot.
First in members will become the "foundation" members of the club and as such will have certain favourable conditions for the life of their membership, and we will need committee members. Membership may be capped to 50.
Shooting is a very enjoyable and precise sport that could lead to greater things such as Commonwealth games or Olympic representation.
Early starters, Junior Shooters, have the best opportunity to progress to International standards and the club has a Junior Development Program to ensure the best possibility.
Juniors at school level also become aware of firearms safety at an early age and that in turn leads to responsible adulthood.
Of late, female shooters have been joining clubs all over Australia and showing their worth.
Many times they are better shooters than the men.
Of course the Club is equal opportunity and we encourage women, or whole families, to join.
Our Vice Chairman and his family regularly attend from Ingleburn.
The Club currently shoots Rifle events at any range within reasonable driving distance and those ranges vary from 50 metres to 1000 metres for larger calibers.
Our Pistol events are currently shot at Cowra where we have an excellent relationship with their club. The Club will be introducing IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) matches which provides for a fast paced action, moving quickly around barriers to shoot at reactive targets.
If nothing else, you should come and be a spectator at one of these fast moving events.
Shooting Sports also offers one more Unique trait.
Regardless of fitness, age, (dis) ability, or any other factor, shooting is a level playing field.
Indeed some of our current members are disabled and can now compete with fully able persons without favour.
