Cr Shaw was a foundation member of the South East Regional Organisation of Councils (SEROC), which is now known as the Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CBRJO).
Until recently, Cr Shaw was the Chair of the organisation which operates as a network of 12 Councils across the South East of NSW including Bombala, Boorowa, Cooma-Monaro Shire, Eurobodalla Shire, Goulburn-Mulwaree, Harden Shire, Palerang, Queanbeyan City, Snowy River Shire, Upper Lachlan, Yass Valley, Young Shire, as well as the ACT Government.

Cr John Shaw was has been involved with local government for over 29 years and was recognised for continual service.
In 2012 he received the Emeritus Mayor award from the Local Government and Shires Association for his contribution to local government.
At a regional level, Clr Shaw is a member of the Country Mayors Association and was chair of the Board of the Canberra Region Joint Organisation until his term expired in 2015.
Cr Shaw was first elected to Gunning Shire Council in 1987.
He held this position until the 2004 amalgamation with Crookwell Shire and parts of Mulwaree Shire.
He was elected to Upper Lachlan Shire in 2004 becoming Mayor in 2007.
He has also been involved with the local bushfire brigade and Gunning Pastoral, Agricultural and Industrial (PA&I) Society Inc for the past four decades.
