The newsreader competition was open to High School students across the district, however due to a snowfall brought on by the Antarctic vortex some could not attend.
But the news cycle never sleeps, so in true form the students who were able to make it through the snow went head to head in competition. Debra Eustace, Boorowa Central School's public speaking coordinator worked hard to ensure it was a great event.
"To prepare for the competition students were required to work as a team to allocate who would re-search and create an international news story, an Australian or local news story, and an entertainment piece as well as a sport report. They gave up weeks of lunchtimes to rehearse as a team" she said.
"To add to the difficulty, the audience consisted of very young students from Years 4, 5 and 6 so the competitors were aware that their stories had to be uplifting, mysterious, humorous, interesting, thought provoking, entertaining and be about anything that did not include sadness, violence or tragedy.
Students were encouraged to dress as they see reporters present themselves depending on whether for example they were reporting on casual stories like sport or more formal stories in the news section.
The adjudicators for the day were Jelisa Apps and Greg Eastman who are both media professionals.
"Jelisa gave the students a very inspired speech and question/answer time relating to university studies, career choices and her work as a news reporter," Mrs Eustace said.
Henry Lawson High took home the Boorowa Lions winners trophy and medals while Mulwaree High students were awarded the runners up trophy and medals. A special encouragement award for an outstanding performance from a student not in one of the winning teams was awarded to Year 7 Boorowa Central School student Zac Franklin.
Representing Boorowa were Morgan Liddle, Danii O'Leary, Tully Eccles, Zac Franklin, Max Hagar, Josh Southwell, Milli Smith and Abigail Daniels. An event like this cannot take place without hardworking helpers. Our workers were Jasmine Nash and Amanda Noakes Scorers ( Amanda was also Reserve) April Corcoran and Jasmine Wignall Hosts and Hannah Waters and Claudia Edwards time-keepers.
Catering was supplied by Mrs Southwell and her senior hospitality students. We look forward to holding this competition again in future years.
