The 24-year-old Frogmore man was driving a Landcruiser and towing a trailer when he lost control of his vehicle on Coffee’s Bridge, Rugby Road Boorowa around 3am on Sunday.
The car fell about seven metres to the ground, landing on its roof.
The driver was trapped for some time but was eventually able to free himself from the vehicle but then fell into the river which was heavily swollen due to recent heavy rain.
He swam to the other side of the river and walked till he was able to find a hay shed where he covered himself in hay to ward off the cold.
About 9am he continued on his trek and came across a farmhouse where he gained assistance.
About 6:40am a passing motorist saw the upturned vehicle and notified police.
An extensive search was conducted by the Rural fire Service, NSW Fire and Rescue, Ambulance, Boorowa Shire Council as well as many local farmers.
The SES also searched the river by boat.
After the driver returned home he contacted police.
He was suffering minor scrapes and scratches but nothing more serious.
