Acting Inspector Michael Madgwick said while they believe it began in the kitchen, they're unsure what sparked the fire which tore through the vacant side of the duplex.
Acting Inspector Madgwick said the owner of the duplex and a guest were at home in the unit next door at the time of the fire.
He said they heard a sound like rain and looked out to see the adjoining unit on fire.
Firefighters quickly attended and extinguished the blaze.
The people on the property escaped unharmed.
Police forensics attended the scene and on Monday morning, detectives from Young and fire investigators continued to examine the property.
