The game was always going to be a big test as the Wombat's had a large squad both in size and numbers.
True to their name, the Wombat's players were built like bricks, fast over short distances and tackled so hard the Goldies were left climbing out of burrows.
Despite the scoreline, coach Ben Johnson took a lot of positives from the game as he unveiled a number of promising recruits including an ambulance officer, a jackaroo from Zimbabwe, a metal worker, an academic and yet another Merriman.
All of which played with courage and passion, which personifies the spirit of Boorowa rugby.
Ben was also pleased with the execution of defensive and attacking structures that the team had been training for throughout the pre-season.
The game got off to a strong start by both teams, with exchanges of big hits and good attacking rugby.
Boorowa found themselves deep into the Wombat's territory and looked like posting the first points, before a fumbled ball fell straight into the hands of the speedy Wombat outside backs. They proceeded to run ninety meters to score the first points. The Wombats scored another two tries to close out the quarter.
The second quarter got off to a great start with Boorowa's three new recruits, Matt Maberly, Brad Rose and Angus Merriman combining in a neat set move which resulted in Merriman storming through a gaping hole and then dragging two defenders over the line to score.
Rose successfully converted the try and in doing so inherited the goal kicking duties for the season.
From that point on it was a very close game and it was only momentary lapses in concentrated that saw the wombats score another five tries to close out the game.
Despite the loss, Boorowa showed plenty of promise and your writer has no doubt that the Goldies will feature in finals football this year.
Points were as follows: 1 point - Matt Batt and Brad Rose; 2 points - Matt Maberly; 3 points Angus Merriman.
This Saturday the Goldies play the Cootamundra Tri-Colours at 2pm at Cootamudra. Go the Goldies!
