Boorowa restricted the Buffaloes to a reasonable total of 5/218 but unfortunately couldn’t capitalise on their bowling effort and were blown away by a rampant Bowning bowling attack.
To their credit the youthful Boorowa team never gave up and the younger players will be better for the run. For the fifth game in a row, Boorowa lost the toss with the moral of this story being that coggo should never play two up. Bowning elected to bat first on the synthetic pitch and a lightning outfield on which Boorowa hadn’t graced since the second grade grand final way back in the season 2000/1.
Bowning’s openers began at a blistering pace smashing 50 off the first seven overs and not losing a wicket until the score had reached 73. Boorowa began to slowly peg the run rate back with some good fielding, but by the 30th over Bowning had established a good launching pad for its lower order to really exploit the bowling.
It was then that the unlikely bowling combination of Cameron Johnston with medium pace and Phil Coggins with right arm loopers contained Bowning to just 54 in the last fifteen overs. Cameron finished with 1/31 off 9 overs whilst Phil took 1/28 off seven overs. Other wicket takers included Chris Dwyer who made a welcome return with 1/42 and young gun Jacob Carmody who looked impressive with his pace bowling taking 1/31.
Boorowa gave themselves a real chance of running down the total before the top order was skittled by some hostile opening bowling. Phil Coggins and Nick Ryan fell to short pitched deliveries whilst Brendon Shean suffered a foot injury whilst being dismissed off a Yorker. At 3/7 they were in all sorts of trouble and never really recovered being dismissed for 67. Top scorer was Cameron Johnston with 24 who took the man of the match honours for Boorowa.
This week is the final game before the Xmas break with a home game against the Yass Soldiers Club Snipers. Hopefully the side can cause a minor upset and record a badly needed win going into the break. The competition is set to resume on January 10.
On the international scene, it’s great to see Steve Smith given the chance to lead the National team. He is the best choice and will be one of our greats in years to come. The future is bright for Aussie cricket but hopefully Michael Clarke is not a spent force just yet with plenty of runs to score.
The cricket club would like to wish all the readers and in particular our loyal supporters a very happy Xmas and here’s to a very successful 2015.
