At 12.30am yesterday morning, a 71-year-old man was driving his rigid truck carrying 210 bales of lucerne hay bound for Box Hill in Sydney on the Lachlan Valley Way between Boorowa and Yass.
The driver noticed flames coming from the rear of his truck and pulled over, with the load well alight.
Rural Fire Service brigades from Boorowa and Yass attended and extinguished the fire, but not before the fire caused significant damage to the truck.
Boorowa Council attended and conducted traffic duties.
Council also used a front end loader to remove the hay from the rear of the truck.
A police spokesperson told the Boorowa News the truck suffered $16, 000 worth of damage to the tray, the rear of the cabin and rear wheels and had to be towed.
