'UnAustralian': Elias bail conditions changed so he can place bets

24 Mar, 2011 11:01 AM

Rugby league identity John Elias - accused of approaching a witness in the investigation into illegal betting on last year's Bulldogs and Cowboys match - was granted bail at Bankstown Local Court this morning.

Elias was arrested yesterday for contacting TAB SportsBet Media Manager Glenn Munsie in alleged breach of his bail conditions.

His new bail conditions are that he not contact or approach Mr Munsie or anyone in a domestic relationship with Mr Munsie.

The magistrate said that the accused was not to approach, contact, intimidate or harass Parramatta player Brad Murray and former Herald journalist John Schell.

He is also not allowed within 100 metres of the TAB headquarters, which are in Harris Street, Ultimo.

From the dock, Elias expressed his concern that his bail conditions might prevent him from having a bet at a TAB outlet.

His barrister Giovanni Galluzzo said "it would be unAustralian your honour" in relation to his client not being able to place a bet at the TAB.

His conditions were varied so that he would still be able to bet.

Elias and player Sam Ayoub will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on April 7.
