The secondary swim team that competed at the Western Swimming Qualifying trials on Wednesday, March 4 have once again have done their school proud with some major accomplishments in the pool. Swimming against a record 377 competitive swimmers from 40 schools in the western area, the Boorowa team of 10 put in some very credible performances.
Schools came from afar as Bourke, Cobar, Dubbo, Orange, Parkes, Bathurst, Cowra, Gilgandra, Narromine, West Wyalong, Grenfell, Kandos, etc from the vast western area to compete on the day. The squad of John Dunn, James Dunn, Rudy Corcoran, Chris Turner, Gabriela Corcoran, Murray Armour, Elisabeth Banks, Sarah Hughston, Beth Johnson and Rebecca Luxford should be very proud of their achievements. As a result nine of the squad will go on to represent Western Area at the NSW CHS swimming championships to be held in Sydney from 5th -7th April.
In their individual events James Dunn and Rudy Corcoran (17-19 division) both emerged as western area champions after James won his 100m butterfly event and Rudy his 100m breaststroke. James Dunn went on to have an outstanding meet coming second in 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 4th in 50m free. Rebecca Luxford (14years) began the meet extremely well, swimming her way into 3rd spot in the 400m to earn an her first individual place on the team . This was followed up by Gabriela Corcoran earning a second place in the 16years 100 m breaststroke and Elisabeth Banks (15 years) 3rd pace in the hotly contested 50m freestyle. Murray Armour, Sarah Hughston, Beth Johnson, Rebecca Luxford and John Dunn also swam well.
Meanwhile the relays, always a big highlight of this carnival, saw the 10 squad members combine to swim in 4 relay events on the day. The 15 years girls 200m freestyle relay of Elisabeth Banks, Sarah Hughston, Beth Johnson and Rebecca Luxford came second, while the open boys 200m freestyle relay of James Dunn, John Dunn, Rudy Corcoran and Chris Turner swam an extraordinarily good swim to also earn second spot and earn a trip to Sydney .
The two medley relay teams swam well and came in 6th out of 14 teams. All in all, a pretty good effort against the much larger high schools from around the region.
Congratulations once again to all team members who travelled to Cowra.
Special thanks must always go to the small band of very supportive parents who provide the transport and encouragement which enables these students to participate in trials such as these. Also officiating on the day were Lucy Poplin and Chris Turner in the marshalling area and Rudy Corcoran as starter. Boorowa Central is lucky to have the expertise of these students as well as teachers who are also qualified swimming officials. Mrs Poplin played an important role acting as one of the referees.
The swim team now trains in earnest for the CHS swimming championships to be held inform 5th to 7th April.
