The Australian Clay Target Assoc held their National Trap Championships at Wagga throughout the first week of April.
Weather conditions were close to perfect throughout the week, with more than 500 shooters from across Australia and New Zealand in attendance.
A small band of shooters from the Boorowa Gun Club attended and put in some very strong performances.
These shooters include Matt and Kate Schiller, Dennis Smith, Matt Corkhill and Giulio Serafin.
Wendy, Tony and Glenn Barton, from the Boorowa area, were also in attendance.
Matt Schiller (who turned 18 just prior to the Nationals) put in a good performance during the Championships.
In the Double Barrel event, Matt shot a very respectable 483 targets.
This was Matt’s best single event break by 218 targets.
Matt’s performances throughout the qualifying events, saw him take up a position in the 5 member Junior Mackintosh International Team (under 21yrs).
The Mackintosh Teams (Open, Ladies, Juniors and Veterans) shoot an additional 100 target Pointscore event with a possible score of 300/300.
Matt was the only shooter to shoot this possible score within the Mackintosh shoot and was named ‘High Gun’ for the Junior Team.
Matt was amongst the 21 shooters to receive their Mackintosh Team 100 Break Badges.
This is a terrific outcome and demonstrates great shooting.
Luke Ellison (Forbes) and Matt Schiller partnered up for the National Deauville Doubles Championship.
The pair put in a very consistent performance and narrowly missed out on a place on the podium by coming a respectable 4th out of the 122 pairs to compete.
Their performance was surpassed by Glenn Barton and his partner (Nathan McDonnell-Werribee) who were the eventual winners of the National Title.
Well done boys.
Sixteen year old, Kate Schiller also had a great week and put in some terrific performances.
Kate was a member of the NSW Ladies Team.
This team was also determined at last years NSW State Trap Carnival and is comprised of three lady shooters.
Kate was honoured to be representing her State.
During the National Championships, Kate managed to place 2nd in the Ladies National Double Rise Championship and 3rd in the Ladies National Single Barrel Championship.
Her best performance came in the Junior National Single Barrel Championship.
In this, Kate managed a score of 97/100.
Three other junior shooters managed the same score and the four shooters set out to shoot off in order to determine the outright winner.
A further 23 targets were shot with Kate coming up trumps with a score of 120/123.
This was a popular win with onlookers and saw Kate receive ‘The Michael Diamond Trophy’ for her efforts.
Wendy Barton was also a member of the NSW Ladies Team and put in a very strong performance during the week long event.
Wendy picked up 3rd place in the National Ladies Double Rise Championship and her consistent performances also saw Wendy named in the Ladies Mackintosh International Team.
Wendy’s shooting also saw her awarded with a Mackintosh Team 100 Break Badge.
Wendy was also in the running for the Ladies High Gun award for the National Championships and narrowly missed out on this title.
A great effort, especially as Wendy had not been shooting much in the lead up to the National Championships and to pull out such a terrific performance is a credit to her abilities.
Boorowa Gun Club holds practice nights each Tuesday and will host its next shoot, The George Campbell Memorial on Saturday 23 April.
Look forward to seeing you there.
