Rovers too strong for Crookwell

22 Apr, 2010 08:35 AM
In a much-anticipated return to the Boorowa Showground, the Rovers hosted the Crookwell Green Devils to a very entertaining game of rugby league on Saturday afternoon.

After a disappointing start to the season last week, the Rovers were hell bent on putting up a much-improved performance on their home turf.

The game started with the usual tug of war between the two sides with neither letting the opposition near the try line. Some great lead up runs by Sam Lynam and Nathan Mathews put the Rovers in a very good attacking position.

Then big barnstorming Benny Roberts ran on to the ball like a freight train and after carrying four men over the line, he was able to score next to the uprights.

With most of the possession in the first half, it seemed it was only a matter of time before the Rovers were going to break the line again, but in the last 10 minutes of the first half it was Crookwell who scored two converted tries and went into the break leading 12-6.

After a few stern words at half time by the more experienced players in the side, the Rovers realised they only had to complete their sets to put points on the board.

It wasn’t long and the boys did hang to the ball and within 20 minutes the game was all but over. The Rovers put on six unanswered tries in this period, which was some of the best team, and individual tries you will see for some time. For the Rovers Brian Dwyer bagged two tries, Justin Corkery two, Andrew Swaffield and Brad Earley one a piece.

This week every player seemed to go as well as the next from flying winger Digger Tarrant to the big man Nick Hearne. The Rovers players’ player was Justin Corkery. Three points to Danny Baddock, two points to Justin Corkery and one point to Damian Tarrant.

The Rovers would like to thank their supporters and sponsors for a terrific turn up for their first home game for the season. With the bye this weekend, the Rovers next game will again be at home on Saturday May 1, commencing at 2.30pm. Hop to see everyone there.
